Magic Marshmallow Crescent Puffs

Updated: Mar 13

Also known as Empty Tomb Rolls or Resurrection Rolls, this treat is an irresistible blend of cinnamon-sugar, marshmallow, and butter all wrapped in a crescent roll with a powdered sugar glaze that will melt in your mouth!

Magic Marshmallow Crescent Puffs

This recipe came from my 8th grade home economics class! I remember making these at home as a kid, but the recipe was always in my mom's recipe box so my kids missed out on this sweet treat when they were little. Doing a little research, I learned this recipe won the Grand Prize in the 1969 Pillsbury Bake-Off by Edna Holmgren Walker. I'm sure that's where my home economics teacher found the recipe!

What You Need

  • Sugar

  • Cinnamon

  • Refrigerated Crescent Rolls

  • Large Marshmallows

  • Butter

  • Powdered sugar

  • Vanilla

  • Milk

  • Nuts, optional

Tips for Making Magic Marshmallow Crescent Puffs

  • Seal the rolls! When rolling up the dough over the marshmallow, make sure to pinch edges well, otherwise the marshmallow will leak out

  • Use deep muffin pans (medium muffin cups)!  It's very important to use a deep muffin pan to bake these rolls because it helps them to hold their shape and catches marshmallow spillage.

  • Spray the pan with non-stick cooking spray so cleanup is easy!

How To Make Magic Marshmallow Crescent Puffs

This delicious treat comes together quickly with just a few ingredients!

Step 1: Heat oven to 375°F. Spray 8 muffin cups with nonstick cooking spray. Place butter In a small bowl and melt.  In a separate small bowl, combine sugar and cinnamon.

Crescent dough ready for marshmallow, butter and cinnamon sugar.

Step 2: Separate crescent dough into 8 triangles. For each roll, dip marshmallows into melted butter; roll in cinnamon sugar mixture. Place marshmallow on shortest side of triangle and roll to the wide end of triangle. Ensure the entire marshmallow is covered with dough and firmly pinch edges of dough to seal. If the dough is not completely sealed, the melted marshmallow will leak out.

Prepared marshmallow ready to be rolled.

Step 3: Place each rolled marshmallow in muffin cup. Place pan in oven and bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.  It is a good idea to place foil, wax paper or cooking sheet on rack below muffin cups to guard against spills. Cool in pan 1 minute. Remove rolls from muffin cups; place on wire racks set over wax paper.

Ready for baking.

Step 4: In small bowl, mix powdered sugar, 1/4 teaspoon vanilla and enough milk for desired drizzling consistency. Drizzle glaze over warm rolls. Sprinkle with nuts, if desired. Serve warm.

Baked and drizzled with powdered sugar glaze.

How To Store Magic Marshmallow Crescent Puffs

The rolls are the most delicious when right out of the oven, after cooling for a few minutes. If you have any magic marshmallow puffs leftover, you may store them in an air-tight container at room temperature for up to three days.

The marshmallow has disappeared leaving a gooey, cinnamon-sugar filled tomb.
